THE biggest prize Waratah pensioner Jim Liddell has ever won has been a few small raffles.

But the 91-year-old is thinking about buying himself a lottery ticket after taking out $2500 in the Newcastle Herald's Jackpot Cash Card competition.

Mr Liddell said he planned to use the winnings to renovate his home.

`I can't believe I have won. It will be a big help. It's such a nice surprise,' the Herald reader of 66 years said.

`I have been in the one house the whole time so I am planning to put the money towards renovating one of the rooms.

`I couldn't believe it at first, I knew I had the first two numbers and then I checked the rest against the card and discovered I had won.'

The competition resumes in today's Herald with a $500 cash prize. The Newcastle Herald launched the competition this month when it included a free Cash Card with each copy of the paper.

The rules of the competition are simple.

If the number on your Cash Card matches the number printed each day in the paper, you simply telephone 4979-5105 before 5pm to collect the cash prize.

If the prize is not collected, it jackpots by $500 for the next day.

On Saturdays, the prize increases by $1000.

The competition runs until August 16.

Today's number is on Page 67.
