THE Anglican Church may ban raffles because they are a form of gambling allowing you to "enrich yourself at the expense of your neighbour".

A motion calling on churches to drop the traditional fund-raiser will be debated at the Sydney Anglican Diocese's annual Synod, starting tomorrow.

Synod member Richard Lambert has drafted the motion that parishes drop raffles or "other games of chance" for fund-raising.

"It's a direct denial of loving your neighbour as yourself because you hope to enrich yourself at the expense of your neighbour," Mr Lambert said.

Bishop of South Sydney Robert Forsyth said raffles were not a good way to raise money for churches.
